MATHYR was founded in 2000 by Sagrim and Phlegiaz who had already played together in various bands before. Short time later Chris (b, voc) joined the band and contributed his share to form the music and appearance of MATHYR decisively. This was core-ensemble plus another guitarist who had to leave the band because of personal reasons. Later on he was replaced by Thorson in 2003. MATHYR performed numerous gigs for example with Dew-Scented, Disillusion, Heaven Shall Burn, Hypnos and many more.
According to Sagrim, the birth of MATHYR can be explained by the requirement of creating a medium that enables the bandmembers to present and illustrate their own points of view. The music of MATHYR clearly shows to which level of persistence and directness this aim is pursued. No matter whether you listen to their recordings or see them on stage: the listener only gets little short breaks to take a breath before he drags into a maelstrom of Black and Death Metal again. Up to now MATHYR already released 4 recordings from which especially the 3rd one "Mathyr" has to be pointed out. This album delighted audiences and press in the same way, left its mark and finally prepared the ground for a deal with Animate-Records.
In 2004 MATHYR released their highly publicized album “Mandraenken” in cooperation with Animate-Records. According to the feedback of international press, the release set signs in the metalscene and caught up to eminently respected genre bands. The resultant success was thwarted in 2005, as Chris quit the band. He left a deep gap in the band structure but in spite of this hit or even thus, they started writing the most extreme MATHYR songs so far, which required higher instrumental skills. To reach this goal, Thorson had to leave the band.
Instead of him, Mountheist joined the band, the best man on this position by then. Soon after his engagement he became an indispensable backing in the monument of MATHYR. During the recordings, which demanded every bit of energy from each member, Phlegiaz retreated from the band and from the metalscene and finally left MATHYR in summer 2007. In his own words, he is going to orientate himself in a completely different musical way and will turn his back on the metal scene. Mountheist and Sagrim brought the recordings of “Kryos” to an end and will challenge the future with a constant live line up.
Chris regains his position on bass and growls. In February 2008 drummer Greiv joined MATHYR. To complete the line up, bass player mantys joined in January 2009. He now belongs to the current line up of the band.
