The Oxford Coma is a 3-piece band that writes autobiographical information in third-person, that has tendencies toward art-metal and psychedelic rock, and that sometimes brings in a fourth member to play a second drum kit...because, well, two drummers is double awesome. They (we) combine crafty (yes, we just called something we do 'crafty') engineering and old-school stage lighting tactics with heavy drop-tuned arrangements and improvised psychedelic jams when playing live...making them (us [as far as we know]) unique in the Phoenix metal and heavy rock communities. The whole idea behind this band is to combine the weirdness and freshness of improvisation (a la Primus, the whole genre of jazz, and most of the rock in the 60s and 70s), with the intensity and honesty of good metal (a la Neurosis and eyehategod), and the lasting impact of innovative rock (Nirvana, Tool, (the) Melvins, NIN, Radiohead). They (we) also enjoy parenthetical notation and tongue-in-cheek humor...much to the chagrin of their (our) publicist/manager.
So we don't get scolded too hard, here's a list of stuff we've done:
-Played CBGB festival in NY 2013
-Been reviewed positively by dozens of irrelevant publications (and a few not-so-irrelevant ones like The Big Takeover, Sputnik Music, and New Noise Magazine)
-Endorsed by Orange Amplifiers
-Opened for Fear Factory and Soulfly...for some reason
-Threw dozens of beach balls at Fear Factory's audience from the stage...again, for some reason
-Performed in our undies
-Performed in dashing red suits
-Performed in black light paint
-There is allegedly a PBS documentary on us coming out sometime in the not-too-distant future. It was filmed. We shall see.
