Pagan's Mind, безусловно являющиеся на данный момент норвежской прог-металлической группой номер один, отличаются в лучшую сторону от коллег по цеху тем, что пытаются искать счастья в мелодиях, а не в инструментальных нагромождениях. Структуры песен, в целом, несложны, припевы ложатся на слух, характерные проговые навороты имеются именно в тех количествах, в каких и должны быть. По реализации вопросов тоже нет: хороший вокал, интересная игра гитариста Йорна Вигго Лофстада, сочный звук. Так что "Enigmatic: Calling" смело можно назвать образцом мелодик-прогрессива. |

Вот ведь какая досада – с каждым альбомом норвежцы Pagan’s Mind улучшают качество звука и игры, усложняют композиции, интегрируют в них все больше разных наворотов, а любимым их диском у меня остается первый – “Infinity: Divine”. Проблема в том, что чем дальше развивается группа, тем больше их музыка приближается к американско-немецким стандартам прог-метал, заложенным Dream Theater и Vanden Plas. Стандарты эти, безусловно, высоки, и приближаться к ним почетно, но вот слушать все менее интересно. На переполненной европейской проговой сцене Pagan’s Mind выделяла как раз их нетипичность, пусть даже несколько отдающая сыростью. Зато теперь у них «все, как у людей» - и вокалист, который легко может побороться в конкурсе двойников Джеймса ЛяБри, и барабанщик, который играет почти так же навороченно, как Майк Портной, и изобретательный клавишник, которого, правда, усилиями ненавидящего всякие синтезаторы Фредрика Нордстрема здадвинули на задний план. Нетипичен только гитарист Йорн Вигго Лофстад, которому после ухода своего коллеги Торстейна Ааде пришлось отдуваться за двоих, и который в результате выстроил себе такой мясистый и в то же время чистый гитарный звук, что даже Brainstorm и Primal Fear сняли бы перед ним шляпу. Никто не отнял у группы и способностей писать хитовые композиции – очень хороши “Resurrection” и “Enigmatic Mission”, но если группа и дальше продолжит развиваться в этом направлении, она рискует совсем раствориться в потоке пусть и качественных, но однотипных евпопейских прог-металлических групп.
