 Второй альбом BRAINSTORM, вышедший через год после дебютного “HUNGRY” отличался от первенца разительно. Видимо осознав, что игры с angry-thrash metal ни к чему путному не приведут, ребята вернулись к музыке, зачатки которой пробивались на демо “THE FIFTH SEASON”, и выдали на-гора образец классического германского пауэр-метал, незамутненный никакими привнесенными извне элементами. Сразу же откуда ни возьмись появились яркие мелодии, врезающиеся в память монументальными барельефами рефрены, лихие гитарные соло и… просто хорошие песни, обрушивающиеся на слушателя с первых секунд. “Holy War”, “The Healer”, “Don’t Stop Believing”, “Love Is A Lie”, - любой из этих треков мог бы претендовать на звание главного хита альбома не только у совсем молодых тогда BRAINSTORM, но и кого-нибудь гораздо известного. При этом выяснилось, что дабы избежать навязчивой слащавости, столь свойственной немецкому пауэру и, что скрывать, многих раздражающую, вовсе не обязательно пытаться сделать свой голос на пол-октавы ниже, как это происходило с Маркусом Юргенсом на “HUNGRY”, или судорожно гавкать в микрофон вопреки музыкальному стаффу. Ни голос, ни музыка на “UNHOLY” не звучат приторно – скорее, наоборот, музыка выглядит по-настоящему жестко и «металлически», оставаясь при этом мелодичной и образной. При этом скоростные композиции удаются музыкантам особенно здорово: именно стремительные “Holy War” и “Healer” обращают на себя внимание прежде всего, хотя и среднетемповые “Here Comes The Pain” и “Love Is A Lie” смотрятся на общем фоне вполне уверенно, а с медляками ребята предпочли вообще не заморачиваться – да ну их, в самом деле, лирического вступления в “Don’t Stop Believing” вполне достаточно. Немного обременительно на общем фоне выглядят проникнутые политическим пафосом “Rebellion” и “For The Love For Money”, но не настолько, чтобы испортить впечатление от альбома. Словом, “UNHOLY” продемонстрировал, что у группы имеется весьма реальный потенциал, реализацию которого позднее и взяли на себя “Metal Blade”, но уже с другим вокалистом. Что касается самой первой демозаписи BRAINSTORM, которая вошла на современное переиздание, то оно позволяет лишний раз убедиться, что музыканты начинали именно с той музыки, что прозвучала на их втором альбоме, разве что в более «эпичном» «фэнтези»-варианте. Ну а дебютный альбом оказался лишь не очень удачным экспериментом…
